Norma “Normie” passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Stanley; her parents Lloyd and Zervia Hager (James); her brother Bryce and his wife Mary “Bunky” Hager; her father and mother-in-law Stanley and Mamie Wanucha; and, her brother and sister-in-law Robert and Mary Ann Wanucha.
She is survived by her six children; Stanley M. Wanucha and wife Angela of Canton, MA; Lawrence L. Wanucha of Toledo, OH; Mary Catherine McDowell of Shelby, NC; David J. Wanucha and wife Donna of Mocksville, NC; Lee Ann Wanucha of Toledo, OH; Robert S. Wanucha and wife Jennifer of Nashville, TN; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law and their families from Stan’s side; and, her nephews and their families from her brother’s family.
Norma was born on October 3, 1932 in Firestone, CO. As a child she lived in Denver, CO and Alameda, CA while her civil engineer father worked on water supply projects and ship building during the build-up to World War II. After the war, her family moved to Mobile, AL where she attended Springhill College and met Stanley her husband. In 1953, they were married in the Catholic church and moved to Pensacola, FL where Stan taught and coached sports at Catholic High School. Over the next 13 years, Norma would give birth to six children. She was a caring and devoted mother to her children, homemaker, community volunteer and a loving wife to Stan throughout their marriage. In 1963, the family moved north to Toledo, OH where Stan owned/operated the American Propeller Company servicing/repairing propellers from ocean container ships that sailed the Great Lakes. As their children left the nest, Norma invested her energies in the community as an active volunteer and leader with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Toledo where she advocated for the mentally ill and their families. She was an avid bridge player, gardener, seamstress, enjoyed interior decorating and entertaining. In 1999, Stan and Norma retired and moved back south to Stuart, FL where they lived a happy and prosperous retirement with friends until Stan passed away in 2006. Shortly thereafter, Norma moved to Mocksville, NC to be closer to children where she has lived since 2011. In Lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to NAMI at https://namitoledo.org/.
