Cora Martin McMahan, walked into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on Saturday, November 12, 2022 at 6:28pm.
She was born January 15, 1929, in Cherokee County, NC, to Robert Winfield Martin and Emma Jane “Coleman” Martin.
Cora and Albert McMahan were married on April 9, 1955, and had 65 years together until he was taken home on November 3, 2020.
Cora was preceded in death by her parents, her husband William McMahan, four brothers; Wade Martin, Robert Martin, Howard Martin, and Austin Martin, and five sisters; Mae Young, Bertha Martin, Elna Gilreath, Emogene Patterson, and Shirley Martin.
Cora spent her married life as a homemaker, raising their three children. In addition to being a homemaker, she loved gardening, sewing, crocheting, and making quilts. Cora babysat and later became a foster parent to a countless number of children throughout the years. To many she was known as Miss Cora, and others often called her Mamaw. Many parents even now remember how she would teach their children Bible songs and stories about Jesus. Throughout the years, some children kept in touch with her and would come to visit. To many she became a part of their family.
Cora was blessed to be able to keep her grandchildren and some of her great grandchildren. She was 80 years old when she kept the last great grandchild. She and pa-paw became a taxi service and enjoyed spoiling their grandchildren. Their grandchildren’s most vivid memories are that Mamaw always wore an apron and made the best chicken and dumplings on earth. No one could cook better than Mamaw.
Cora leaves behind, one son, Martin McMahan of Lexington, two daughters Patricia Garner (Dwight) of Lexington, Wilma Gray (Eddie) of Lexington, one brother, Arnold Martin of Georgia, ten grandchildren, Jennifer Hunt, Jessica Garner (Adam), Daniel Gray (Somer), Aaron Gray (Tiffany), Laura Goins (James), Candace Erford (Robby), Brian Sechrest (Shelley), Steven Sechrest (Jessica), Jason Gray (Sawyer), Caitlin Leonard (Scott), sixteen great-grandchildren Courtney Garner, Makynlee Carter, Davis Garner, Duke Garner, Shiloh Gray, Eli Gray, Penelope Gray, Taylor Goins, Chase Erford, Hayden Erford, Brooks Sechrest, Brady Sechrest, James Sechrest, Holland Gray, Jayden Cartrette and Baby Gray being born April 2023.
