Barbara Martin Obituary

Barbara Garner Martin, 83, passed away on Saturday September 3, 2022. Barbara was born on October 18, 1938 in Siler City, NC to the late Burl Garner Sr and Louise Murray Garner.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Martin; a son, Bobby Fisher, a stepson J. Neal Fisher Jr. and her two fur babies Buddy and Tabitha..
Barbara is survived by her 2 brothers, Burl Garner Jr and Frank Garner; her daughters, Theresa Singleton and Amy Martin; granddaughter, Michelle Singleton; grandson, Zaylen Martin; great grandson, Zander Singleton, step grandchildren, Ryan Belluz, Laura Dahlgren, Bryan Perido, step grandchildren, Ewan Dahlgren, Nyah Dahlgren, Aiden Belluz, Quinn Belluz and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was loved by all who knew her. Her time growing up was spent with love and laughter. Much time was spent at granny Murray's where she played with her dolls. One of the stories she told was about burying her dolls in Granny Murray's yard and how a heavy rain came and when she returned to the burial site there were no dolls to be found. She never did find those dolls.

As a young woman just graduating from Bessemer High School, she was asked to become a Flight attendant While flying, she met a man from Texas who would become her first husband. Several years later she gave birth to a daughter, Theresa and rescued two sons, Neal and Bobby, and raised them as her own.

Skip forward some 20 years, Barbara moved back to NC from Texas and after working as a bookkeeper she found the second love of her life and was married to Jim Martin (aka Husband) with that marriage she acquired another daughter, Amy. After they were married they bought and ran a marina on High Rock Lake for several years before opening a craft store in Lexington. People came in the craft store as customers, but left as friends. During her years running the store, her Granddaughter spent many summers with her giving both of them wonderful, lifetime memories. After many years at the craft store, she took a seasonal giftwrapping position at Belk in Lexington. This turned into long term employment lasting over 10 years. You could always tell what department she was working in by listening for her laughter. She met and befriended so many people. Everyone that new her loved her, her super power was her (big) smile and (loud) laughter.

The last years of her life were spent in 3 different nursing homes where she quickly won over the staff at each new home. While visiting, her daughter was told time after time how she lit up the room with her spirits and laughter.
Her story ended with a 2 day stay at The Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory NC, where she was taken after having a heart attack. She was joined there by her family and was never left alone. She was holding her granddaughter’s hand as she left this world to pass peacefully into heaven.

The family would like to thank the ER doctors, nurses and the Cardiac and ICU doctors who were there to help our family thru this time of need.
